Yes, that's it.

If you want to play games, download a .love (there are many games on this forum), and double click on it.

If you want to make a game yourself (obviously you want that), you make a new folder and name it "YourGame.love" (assuming you want to call your game YourGame. Give it a nice and relevant name). Then, inside that folder. you make a file called "main.lua". You write your game in there.

You can that double click on the folder (not on main.lua), and it should open in LÖVE.

If your main.lua is empty, you should now see a black window. See Getting Started on the wiki (the part "Making a Game"). After that, take a look at the Tutorials.
Help us help you: attach a .love.

Just to add to Robin's words that in OSX you don't even need rename a folder to anything.love. You can drag that folder to love.app and it will run. In fact later you will discover that straight rename the folder to folder.love it's not advisable because even that works for you that don't make your game well packaged for others (even that looks for you that is). You can correctly package your games for distribution by entering in that folder and compress (with right click) all contents. Then rename the archive.zip to anyname.love. You can then safely distribute (and upload to forum for example) without fear.
