I stumbled across Open Broadcaster Software (OBS; obsproject.com) which seems, well, great for recording your desktop and even video editing. Does anyone out there have further experiences with OBS or other software that would be useful for recording gameplay footage or Love2d coding tutorials?

You could record specific window, for that you select the relevant source and in a settings dropdown select relevant window. You can add more sources such as other windows or still images or video clips and whatnot. Same thing with audio sources, you'd normally catch system wide audio but you can also (if OS allows) record specific sound sources.

Since you've got OBS working, then I suggest you stick with it. All the potentials of video recording are there.
All I got is simplescreenrecorder.

I use OBS on recording simple love2d tutorials.

To record gifs or mp4 i use a free recording software oCam. It is simple and records better quality vids than OBS. Also It can color your left right middle mouse clicks.
