A simple arcade-style space-fighting two player game. It's my first game, I would greatly appreciate feedback and critique!

Welcome to the community. This is a pretty awesome start for game development. My only critique would be the size of the file.

Awesome! Majority of the file seems to be the music (57,000kb). Is there a way to compress that?

Very well done! Two small observations:

On an AZERTY keyboard, it's hard to use WASD to move the ship.

When I am on the start screen and press "esc", I would expect the game to close.

Not a bad first game. Here a few things I would suggest:
-filesize should not be over 15 mb (use OGG and PNG if necessary)
-one match started with an asteroid spawning on top of my ship before I could react
-asteroids need to be rotated on the second screen
-no real benefit of using a split screen since the screen doesn't move,
personally I would have used a single screen for this type of game with players on the left and right
-gameplay needs to be "juiced" up, like for example shooting an opponent
should give a clear visual clue (flashing or a particle effect) so that it really looks like you're dealing damage
-the help section is a little outdated IMO you could just integrate the hints in the game
without having a separate "help" option
Good job though, it's not bad for a first project.

Thanks for your feedback! I went for the split screen so both players could have the same "bottom-up" perspective. As for the file size, I am using .png/.ogg/.wavs. It seems that the music (.wav) is taking up the most memory. Would converting to .ogg reduce the file size, or would I have to choose shorter music?

It would indeed reduce the file size.

Not that I'm aware of. It's really a minor issue really the game is awesome.
