I am currently running love 0.9.9 under ubuntu 13.10 and noticed a large difference in framerate depending on the drivers I'm using.

If I am using the oss nouveau drivers I can get around 120/fps Using the proprietary nvidia drivers I get 60/fps on my gtx 650.

In my experience the opposite should be the case. Usually the closed drivers run significantly faster for me. Are there any features that may not be supported with the proprietary driver?

Both drivers support canvases I there anything else I should be looking for?

Do you have vsync enabled in your game? It is by default, in LÖVE. Having vsync on will limit your framerate to your monitor's refresh rate, which is usually 60 Hz.
