You might want to change the phpBB captcha for one of the plug-in captchas.
There are a couple of question-based captcha mods:

And there's also reCaptcha, which uses words that OCR programs haven't been able to read for captchas, while you have to enter two captchas (one known, and one unknown word. If the known word is right, it expects you managed to read the unknown word.). I'm not sure how well it works, I haven't tried it, but it looks interesting, and it's used to digitize books:
