Welcome to the
ASTOUNDINGLY SIMPLE PIXEL ART EXTRAVAGANZA CONTEST!

This contest started on July 11th, 2011 and will end August 1st, 2011. At which point there will be a community vote of all the submissions.
You get 3 weeks to show off your sexy sweet grainy bits!

"What is pixel art?" you say. Pixel art is the stupendously awesome art-form of using the pencil tool to create images. (Ha, this definition sucks. Sue me)

"But why?" you now inquire. Constraining yourself to a seemingly impossible rule-set sometimes can produce the most original of ideas. It can also produce faster results. If these previous two reasons do not satisfy your inquiry, then it is because I simply like pixel art and you need to stop asking.

"Why is this on a game-development site?" you banter in continual protest. Well, game-development includes art as well as programming. There are tons of non-programming tasks in game-development.

"But I don't have Adobe Photoshop!" you whine. There are tons of free pixel art programs out there for you to choose from. Not to mention, mspaint can even be used. Just open one up, create an appropriately sized canvas, choose the pencil tool, and go!

"I don't know, this seems kind of hard. I don't even know where to start." you whimper defeated. Don't give up already! There are even really good tutorials on drawing pixel art out there [The pdf's at the bottom are excellent] and [2]! Just don't fret, you can do this!

"LETS DO THIS! I GOT MY PENCIL READY! I PUT ON MY ROBE AND WIZARD HAT!" Whoa, hold on there buddy. There are some rules you need to read first. Not following them will disqualify your submission.
You get:
  • 8x8, 8x16, or 16x8 pixels per image. "WHAT! I can't do anything in that small amount of space!" You just need to put on your crafty pants.
  • 3 colors + black+white+transparent. Don't worry, I assure you, you get to choose your own 3 colors. (As if that was the part you were worried about)
You turn in:
  • Needs to be uploaded and attached to a post.
  • Needs to be a PNG.
  • You can have as many submissions as you like.
  • Submissions must be liberally licensed. Anywhere between free-to-use with credit and public domain.
Now get to it! And submit anything you can muster up!

Also, the prize is worth $$$. If you are willing to PM me your address if you win, I will buy you any book up to 30$(including shipping) off amazon.

Amazing there are no images on this post. =]

SUBMISSION VIEWER:
Warning: Images taller than 16px will be cut off in the viewer. They can be very wide though with no problem.
arrow keys or mouse: move masterpieces.
spacebar: toggle white/black background.

I've grabbed my wizard hat!
Edit: And my robe! ...or maybe its a scary helmet. Bah, don't care, 8x16 leaves a lot to the imagination.

I like this!

I've done a collection of 12 8x8 tiles. I'm attaching them as a single image.

What it is... you will have to guess.

Let me know if an other format is preferred for collections / tilesets (i.e. a zip file with the separate images inside). I've used gray as the background color.

Edit: Added hi-def version (didn't know that black and white didn't count)

Here's a Sword, Staff, Mace, and Shield. More may come or I may make 8x16 versions, I haven't decided. All of them use the same 3 colors plus black, white, and transparent (I know that was not part of the requirement that all images use the same colors). I'm not worried about the black outlines conflicting with the black BG in LOVE because they look good with or without them. :awesome:

Uploading a second, much better set. This one is themed "Things you might find in an adventure game". Items are (from left to right): Sword, Fishing Pole and Hook, Staff, Pitchfork, Mace, and Bow. I'm shooting for a high visibility contrast theme, to make them visible even at native 8x16.

@kikito: Nice street fighter characters. Blanka gave it away.

Yes, it was SF2. Technocat knew it before (he sent me a PM with the answer).

Technocat, I think the 3-rules color isn't clear enough. "3 colors + black/white/transparent" can be interpreted in two different ways, depending on how you read the slash.

I understood I had to use "3 colors + a background" but it seems that Ensayia has read it as "3 colors + white + black + a background" (which is another valid way to read it - it just didn't occur to me when I read the rule).

Can you clarify this?
