How do people get these special ranks?

By being totally awesome.

They drank a lot of milk when they were younger.

And now they rule a forum and can have personalized badges.

That's pretty much it.

bartbes got his from rude when he was “promoted” to dev (and it's Sex Machine, btw )

avalon/avapi and thelinx got theirs for hosting love2d.org

I got mine because I broke the 1000-post barrier (the second and up to now last person to achieve that feat).

I'm not sure about thelinx's, but rude made the rest of those names up.

I gave me my own title.

They have mad player skills, and that's why they have custom titles.

Anything else is a conspiracy.

No, moderators can set special ranks on whoever they like, but only moderators can (and administrators, but you get my point).
