I am planning to start a dev blog with one of my friends, and he thinks we should use tumblr. I think we should use wordpress. What do you use for dev blogs?

Ok, so here's my five cents.

Wordpress is awesome; it's open source, self containing, and it works out of the box.

But the advantage that tumblr has is the straight forward simplicity of it. The idea here is to spend less time on the site, and more time on the content, and tumblr forces you to do that.

If you're seek a good looking blog that forces you to write content, tumblr is awesome.

But, the second you get your own domain (e.g. you're not using Nsmurf.wordpress.com or Nsmurf.tumblr.com) you need to start using wordpress (or some form of software. Yes, you can hook tumblr/wordpress to your domain, but unless you're willing to drop cash on a paid theme, it will become distasteful.)

edit: Here are some interesting statistics.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, but those are only the page views, not unique visitors, a category where WordPress seems to be ahead.

Tumblr is well known (at least where I'm from) for being used by heaps and heaps of hipsters who nick pics off each other and make countless reposts of lame stuff...

...hardly a reputation that is going to help you look professional.

Being forced to write content is terrible - unless you have something meaningful to write (it's a dev log, after all), it would be best not to write anything rather than spew mindless 'status' updates all over the place.

From my personal experience from when I was doing freelance web development work WordPress was the only software considered for blogging. There are countless reasons why I would urge you to use WordPress, but the main ones are:

- Easy to use
- Widely Supported
- Relatively straight forward to customise (within reason, you can get really involved in how it works but decent themes are only £20 - £40).

My main advice is to try out all of the options your considering, and then use the one that you find most comfortable to work with.

Hope that helps, :)

Tom.

My exact problem with Tumblr, to be honest. It's a nice system if you can avoid the crazies.

You can code HTML in Wordpress...

Edit : Since I got warned 2 times about double posting... I think this girl (look at her website) is a scammer or something. Bookmarking Service? High ranks? Just for 5 dollars? I usually don't trust those offers, and neither any person who's smart.
