Would it be possible to make a 2d mmorpg (think realm of the mad god) using love?

Yes. MMORPG's are probably the hardest and most time consuming genre to make though. If you're just starting out, I recommend making a Snake or Pong clone as your first game.

I guess I might as well go ahead and add my opinion.
It is certainly possible! Study up on your socket stuff :/ . There are great tutorials on UDP sockets on the site, and if your good enough with lua, you'll figure it out. When I see a post like this I never shame someone for wanting to create an MMORPG because that is my passion. You can, in time, see a simple mmo like come to life with Love. Sure, your probably not going to create a super awesome MMORPG in the next year or so, but who says you can't try? Here's a cool task if your familiar with sockets...
Create the Client, and Server program. Make it to where you can host the server, and when a client connects he can move his square around on the server.
This is not descriptive for a reason. Use your brain, study up, and in time...You'll have a cool program to mess with for the next few weeks.
If you can complete that task, then keep going and going until you have something that's fun. Nothing is impossible. Just gotta work for it.

You can make an MMO with LOVE2D alright, but a project of that size is gonna need a BIG team of programmers, 2d artists, music composers, etc, not mentioning server-related issues, constant upgrade an improvements to keep the players busy, and so on.
Think like doctors do when prescribing a beta-blocker drug: "start low, go slow"

Just guessing since is probably the most popular drug of that kind. It's nearly impossible not know friends with one of that. So I got some knowledge about beta-blockers and that stuff. A too common disease unfortunately but there worst things in those days. Get well and don't burn yourself with that things!
Any way back to topic there is some people that die playing MMORPG's.

Yes, specially those that make you wanna puff the entire Ventilan cartridge down your throat from the excitement lol.
Btw, fortunately I don't have asthma nor any other airway disease. I know them just because it's my job to do so.
