Source Engine, SDK

Since I recently installed Windows strictly for games (really, it has only Steam and misc games installed. Oh and hamatchi and the likes) I decided to grab the Source SDK and see how it's changed since the days I used to play the GoldSrc games.
So has anyone played around with it before? At the moment I'm just working on a Counter-Strike: Source map called de_refinery that will be some sort of mineral refinery. Though I was leafing through the documentation and it seems like a neat engine to mess around with.
I was wondering whether anyone has any tales, examples or tips from their own experiments with it. I was also considering reinstalling garys mod since that seems to be easily modded. It also has the advantage of using lua, which I already know thanks to this place
