Or they're all created by the same exact Spambot using a template. Seriously, they all should have been deleted the second they showed up. It's not that hard to notice they're spam accounts. My OCD would have had them deleted within an hour of being created. But then again, it's my OCD.

Especially that last one.. bartbes.. What kind of name is that?

Yes, young adult bots. But since the "The Great LOVE User Forum Purge" they stopped having birthdays. They are more shy now I guess. :D

I actually forgot checking if my prevision come true! Damn bot! He is late 10 days. I really failed, sorry. Hmmm, the counter goes now in 9750 users so probably more four days (please bot, don't fail again!) and we can celebrate 10th users around. With 8600 bots fatting the MySQL database of course. Amazing!

Actually, I just made phpBB not display the birthdays of people that have not made any posts. (bots and lurkers)

Notice how they're all machines. At least bartbes is honest about his true nature.

I'll settle for that. Just hate the feeling most of the users here aren't actual people. Just robots sleeping until their next scheduled unintelligable spam post. Seriously, what's the point of using a fake sentence generator to make the post look like it has substance? They might as well just use Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. It looks just as real and is just as likely to be deleted.

I do find it intriguing how it all works though. It's pretty sophisticated stuff scanning the website it's on for topics then creating a fake topic and fake post with specific key words designed to look at a glance like a real post.

I think we should have a list of key words that can't be posted by anyone with less than 1 or 2 posts. Like UGGS. Have you noticed most of the spam has something to do with Uggs? WTF? They're stupid boots. I don't get why they're popular. They're in the same category as Crocs if you ask me, just not as ugly. But whatever. It could be about iPads or some other hot item like.. is Tickle Me Elmo still the big thing? Or Tomagotchi? Whatever. Anyway, if someone tries to post a topic or post with those words in them, they are automatically disqualified and shown a polite message that only a human would see, not a robot, telling them not to use specific words. It would work fine as long as no real user tried to post about Uggs, and really, this is a game designing forum, not a shoe outlet so really, there's no reason to use that word.

So I'd put Uggs as one word. I'm sure there's others. Like Viagra. Basically words NO ONE would ever post about on any forum let alone this one unless they were a robot trying to advertise.

I'd also say use a detection system to stop people from posting only in Russian (Or whatever that language is) and only let the post through if it contains some English, but you'd need something more sophisticated that wouldn't flag posts that just have a few words in them. If someone posts all in a foreign language it would give them a polite error letting them know this is a mainly English speaking forum.

And of course, that would only apply to Zero posters as well. Normal people could post all the Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Canadian, Spanish, Deutsch, Brazilian they want with no problem. Only the people who haven't posted yet would get the message. It wouldn't delete their account, just bar the post from going through unless they post in English if also as well as Russian or whatever.

Though I'm sure we have plenty of people here that are legitimate who would oppose it. But really, if it's your first post, you should probably post in the language that 99% of the forum is posted in. (I really don't get why that Russian bot is even targeting us. How is it coming to that conclusion that anyone here even understands it?)

*When I say Russian, I am just guessing. I don't actually know what language it is actually in. It just looks Russian.

I think it is not directly for us. Instead, they probably hit as many forums as they can, maybe 1% of them has no-one to moderate or are abandoned or something, and they hope for that. But anyway, we're not the ones supposed to click those links, if I'm right, because those links and the keywords/phrases that accompany them are probably meant for SEO.

I understand your points. It's sad about the fake users but well those are webmaster/admin decisions and not our call. Captcha in registrations probably and usually would stop or slow down their actions.

Just some ramblings that (should) explain their technique. The spammers aren't really very concerned if the posts are deleted. They know that will happen soon or later. They only hoping that the posts are seen by some people and specially indexed by googlebot and others spiders before get deleted. About use Hugs, Viagra and all other usual magic words I have serious doubts that in our days their old Spam 1.0 methods still works to count and rank up in SEO. I'm not sure how or if profiles are indexed here but "our" spambot seems more interested in spam a particular list of sites in profiles than do posts. Maybe their only objective is get occasional clicks from people.

EDITED: Robin yes you right. However I think Google already know very well how to deal with them.
