Started with Java, wrote a few mods, modded a game with lua, learned more lua, wrote a bunch of stuff in lua myself and now I am in Uni and have to learn Java again 
There is no better or worse, but all in all I'd say it's easier to accomplish some cool stuff early on with Lua and LÖVE. The entry level is pretty low.
Here are some java engines worth checking out:
- libgdx
- LWJGL
