Adding relevant information to an existing thread isn't bad per se, but the previous people involved in this thread are pretty unlikely to be around anymore after this long time, and in some other cases the whole thread might not really relevant anymore (like a discussion about now-obsolete functionality in LÖVE or something). I think it'd be better to rewrite the reply into something that can exist as its own thread, like a tutorial/article/blog post, aimed at the current users, and be subject to its own discussion.
