It sounds like the problem is essentially with Debian's packaging system (and Debian Stable's lack of any modern software or modern dependencies.)
Someone has put together a completely standalone downloadable build of LÖVE 0.9.2 for Linux: https://bitbucket.org/funkeh/love-linux-distribution
It has minimum system requirements, of course (as does LÖVE in general – and its dependencies, no matter the operating system.) LÖVE and its dependencies like SDL2 do require operating systems to provide a bare minimum amount of features from the past decade or so, although maybe that does exclude old versions of Debian Stable...
