I am really terrible at remembering names. The thing that I really associate people with are their avatars. So for me it is very annoying when people keep changing them. Change your names as much as you like, but stick with the avatars!

My alias situation is a bit strange. Ever since I was about 9 I've been using "baconhawka7x" (baconhawk is from an annoying youtuber I used to watch, and a7x is a band that I don't even listen to anymore). But ever since I started Sock Munkee Dev a few years ago, I've also gone under "munkeebacon" and made quite a few friends with that name. Also, I have my music production, in which I go under "pledge", where I have also met a nice group of people.

I guess it depends on why you are getting a new alias, but for me, having multiple ones is kind of great. I have met a large variety of new people and made great connections. So maybe if you are ever put under the circumstance of needing a new one, don't think of it as just completely abandoning your old one, but adding onto your current "list".

Never put too much thought into aliases when I first got into the internet stuff, usually just used something that wasnt taken... like back in my GameMaker days, it was jimbeam.

Then I got into gaming and one game specifically, swcombine, and ever since then aliases have stuck, especially there. Even people I know outside the game still call me Echo because that was my characters name. Once I got into coding, I wanted a place to store all my snippets and partially completed projects, and at the time I used vynom because I thought it sounded spiffy - yes spiffy. Threw a .com on the end, and now I think its just stuck with me although the coolness level is not over 9000.

I think its just a reflection of the place you are in life, and you just add to it over time. It's actually quite interesting thinking back on it now.

I had some peculiar pseudonyms over the years

* Shivan3000 (MTG's Shivan Dragon && Sim City 3000)
* nesstokyo (SSB) and
* most likely a few other ones.

I then game up with a few requirements for an online pseudonym:

* It needs to relate to myself over time (so no more cultural references)
* It needs to be unique (no other google results, and no possibility of new results other than my own)

It's simply a combination of my first, middle and part of my last name. To this day, no regrets. By using parts of my real name, it forces me to be a nicer person online, as opposed to an anonymous asshole.

In the end, it doesn't matter too much, IMO, so long as you're consistent among a single community.

I came up with the name Jasoco in 1994 when we got AOL. It's a combination of my name and company. I've used it for 20 years, but have wanted to drop it completely for a while now. I use the name Rogue Carrot now for my game creation related activities and if I were to change my name here that's what it would be. I tried to get the name on Twitter but somehow some teenage girl is using it, which makes no sense as she doesn't seem to require it. So I changed my name on Twitter from Jasoco to TheRealAbed, which is what I go by on NeoGAF. It's because I love Community and my head is filled with pop culture knowledge no one needs to know but I will make sure I tell them whenever I get a chance. I could have used TheRogueCarrot on Twitter but since most of my friends on Twitter are GAF members it makes the most sense to keep it consistent.

If I ever release a game for the public, I'll probably change my name here just to make it less confusing to outsiders. For now I'll just keep it.

Dude, I did the exact same thing. Specially since here in Brazil we have a *really* famous guy with a similar name so I felt a need to differentiate. No regrets either.
