Agreed, we're considering replacing Lua with PHP or maybe Perl for the next release.

Is 0.9.0 far enough that it's most likely safe to start porting code over to it, or are there still major changes still being made?

I downloaded the nightly files, had to change one line (love.graphics.setmode) in my file to make it compatible.
That was much easier than I expected.
