so hard to limit so i'll do series >_>

1) final fantasy (and chrono trigger...heck, most stuff by square. front mission for example -so- under-rated.)
2) fallout, 2d and 3d (and skyrim, same engine as 3d.)
3) Metal gear solid 1234 PO PO2 PW etc
4) Contra / probotector (hard corps = god tier)
5) mass effect (use same save from 1 to 3 for the win.)

this list feels way too short

My tastes change over time, so I don't use the term favorites, but I can say which games I keep going back to

1. The final fantasy series. Everyone who's played more than 1 game from this series has played most of them, so it's really a question of your preferred ordering. Mine is 7, 6, 5, 9, 3, etc. etc. And for what it's worth, I'll lump Chrono Trigger in with this one, since it's an FF game in spirit.
2. Actraiser. Remember that one where you play god bringing humanity back to earth by killing demons and then building their towns SimCity style? I really loved this one. I play it start-to-finish about once a year.
3. Minecraft. I've been too busy to play it much in the last few months, but this is a great game. Especially if you've got friends and family who will play SMP with you over a very long period. Actually, I have a flickr set from a long while ago where a friend, my younger brother, and I took on Super Hostile: Legendary. That was an awesome map. Also here's a tour of my SMP server from 2012, Slightly Burning.
4. I played Left4Dead and Left4Dead2 a _lot_. I'm not very big on shooters, but this was a great shooter. It really did get how a Co-Op game should work.
5. Portal and Portal 2 are also freaking great games. Valve really understands how to make something entertaining.

Honorable Mentions:
1. I played a lot of jRPGs when I was younger. I have a place in my heart for Wild Arms, Legend of Legaia, Disgaea (and La Pucelle and Phantom Brave).
2. The Metal Gear Solid series is a total mindbender.
3. I was big in the Megazeux community like 10 years ago. There's way too much stuff there to list.
4. There's been some pretty good indie games as of late. Bastion and Thomas Was Alone deserve highlighting.

So, thanks guys for letting me wallow in Nostalgia for a few minutes.

Nooo! The "fucking" is not really part of the title. It's a PS1 3D platformer that I finished more than five times probably.

This is one of those questions which you could ask me six months from now and I would have a different answer. So in no particular order:
  • Journey. The aesthetic harmony of this game blew me away. Austin Wintory’s soundtrack brought flavor and texture to the adventure game in a way I had seen since Kow Otani’s work on Shadow of the Colossus. I consider Journey to be a masterpiece of minimalism and quality, in every aspect.
  • Imperishable Night (aka. Touhou Eiyashou). What can I say, I’m a bullet-Hell shmup fan. I enjoy the entire Touhou franchise, but Imperishable Night is the one I have played most over the years. I enjoy the two-character aspect, and I feel like scoring system strikes a nice balance between rewarding practice while not being absurdly difficult. I say that with a very biased opinion though, as I’m getting close to sinking one-thousand hours into that game….
  • Silent Hill 2. Horrifically well-written.
  • Street Fighter III: Third Strike. This could pretty much be any fighting game. My friends and I compete with each other at these games with a ruthless passion that makes it a miracle we’ve remained friends. I could just as easily have listed any other entry from the series, or any Soul Calibur, or Virtua Fighter, but I am selfishly picking the one that I am the best at, heh.
  • Phantasy Star 2. Two of my favorite role-playing games are Final Fantasy 6 and 7, but Phantasy Star 2 shocked me with epic plot-twists and deaths years before any other console RPG franchise.
