im a ubuntu / nvidia user too

but the key word there is user, not guru

I tried running a random game that uses SDL, same error. Guess I'll ask the Ubuntu forums now.

probally use apt-get remove to uninstall SDL and apt-get install to re install it

most of the time, for me at least, it works with most other programs

I don't know, you might try to reinstall SDL as osgeld said, (however in synaptic there it is possible to do a re-install, and it is probably called libSDL).
The setup itself isn't wrong in anyway, I'm using the 8500GT as well (although I'm using the newest drivers, shouldn't make any difference).

Fixed: Built SDL myself.
