3D in this case is just doing a lot of math. The same amount of calculations could be used for any kind of game really. LuaJIT helps in the process by making calculating much faster no matter what you're doing, so it's a Win-Win either way when using the LuaJIT version.

It's my prerogative to push Löve past what it was meant to do! And by gum, I shall do just that! (As shall many other people here since I am not the only person playing around with 3D.)
