Linux is a weird one. Seems some companies don't really want to support it for some reason, especially weird since Mac and Linux share the same kernel base so it shouldn't exactly be rocket science. An example is Silverlight. Its available (with DRM) for every platform except Linux, which means Netflix works for every platform except Linux (natively). There is a Winehack, and it seems to work ok, but thats besides the point.

Pickle looks cool. Googled AIR and seems there is a linux build. I'll try it. I have been trying to use ASEPRITE but I am completely new to pixel art, so haven't gotten 100% comfortable with it. I'm still opened to new things.

I got really comfortable with Photoshop over the years. GIMP just doesn't do it for me. Subtle differences on how the program works slows down my creativity because I think in Photoshop terms since it was the first I learned.

Pencil is an easy cross-platform animator, but it crashes a bunch (linux), so you have to save often. I really like animation and drawing in Flash, but I haven't used it since MX 2004 so don't know where its evolved. Team MEAT uses flash and have an export that (I am assuming here) converts the vector images to text/vectors for import into their engine. Flash has scripting so you could probably extend it quite a bit. I have my old version of Flash and might try to load it in wine and see if I can write a script to make sprite sheets.

EDIT: Holy quoting batman!

Not even nearly. Linux (GNU/Linux to give it it's proper name) uses a Linux kernel. Mac OSX uses a Mach kernel. Very different. The kernel isn't so much the issue though but the userland (GNU vs Darwin) and the licensing surrounding it.

Personally, I do almost everything in Paint Shop Pro 9 (the last version Jasc made before Corel bought them), or if I want to do "natural media" work or otherwise use my graphics tablet, I use MyPaint.

GIMP and Blender, always. Mostly Blender because I can't draw for shit.

Just an update: after working with Pickle for a bit, I still love it! I never thought I'd say this, but for pixeling I much prefer it over GraphicsGale. All of the graphics for my current project have been done with it.

Hi2all!

I create my own freeware graphics editor PaintCAD 4Windows for pixel art =) You can operate with this editor using ONLY keyboard (but can use mouse or touchscreen also).

And there is cursor on image operated by you! Also you can create fonts, pack/unpack animated GIFs, pack/unpack AVI videos, use webcamera for getting photo/video/3d-photo/3d-video, draw 3d pictures and animations (anaglyph and stereopair), draw PNG images with semitransparency. Also PaintCAD contains some mini-tools: mini-webbrowser, IRC client, Muzz music compozer.

Check it out (latest version) at http://blackstrip.ru/pcw.rar

Also there is reduced version of PaintCAD for Java mobile and Android:

I'm on OSX, I use gimp for pixel art, the paintbrush is a quick way to add texture to any low resolution image:D and for anything but pixel art I usually use flash.

Oh how did I miss this interesting thread, let me help digging it out :D
Not trying to repeat what got said already enough times, I recently used Blender for drawing tiles, what works pretty cool.
2 short vids that show how it works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvacGEWE6bM 40 sec
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00HWY28YJsM 2 min
Then, what to add.. http://icofx.ro/ for finishing Icons (packing them etc)
http://al.chemy.org is a great brainstorming drawing toy (though some skilled people have proved on youtube, what awesome stuff one can tickle out of it).
Serious painting: http://krita.org .. 2D noobs can still have fun with tons of brush settings, though :)
for Node-based tileable texture generation, there is http://neotextureedit.sourceforge.net/ - I dont use it much though, except the time it was new and excited me.

Photoshop for everything I do.
