Anbitious Idea for a project!

Post by ub3rl1t »

Hello I'm Sam. I would like to ask you guys for help and suggestions on my project. My idea is to create a RPG game. Simple and very easy to customize. That's part 1. Part 2: An editing software for the game. Maybe on a simple language like Visual Basic. With it you'll create the maps and game events. Like RPG Maker, using LOVE as the engine foundation. In theory this can be done with other game play styles as well. A top down shooter can be scripted and customize. A Magic The Gathering style card game could be scripted and customize.

All your suggestions are welcome.

Any help will be very appreciated.

Good idea, however with projects like RPG Maker and RPG Toolkit looming about, it may be hard to compete :P.

If you think you're up to it, and are prepared to make an entire 2D rpg system, level editor, GUI, quest editor, and scripting-implemented scripting language, go for it my bro. It is possible, so that should drive you.

besides the usual "ok" response i would usually give to someone poping out of the blue and announcing something like this, one thing puzzles me

why use different languages to do all of this in? things like wxlua and murga lua already exist to make applications and would be a whole lot easier to use when transfering to love

also scripting games is what love already does, why the other stuff when your going to script it anyway?

The editing tools is for my friend who uses RPG Maker. he loves making games but does not like to program, I like to program so I figure if I can create a generic enough RPG game I could edited with a tool or manually. And the reason why I chose love is because I run linux and he runs windows. and love can run on many OS. I mean maybe it is a dumb idea but I think I want to spent my time doing this.

You should see what I've got so far. Though my game has changed from an RPG to more of a Zelda style adventure game.

I'm not ready to show it off yet though.

ub3rl1t,

Well, what new features over the existing RPG systems, like RPG Make and RPG Toolkit, do you want?

There are numerous open-source Map Editors: http://mapeditor.org/,http://www.tilemap.co.uk/mappy.php,http://www.dannylum.com/D2DProject/, and http://tilemapeditor.com/ that could help jump start things.

Hope this helps.

For our HMProject, I've wrote a wrapper-class for mapeditor.org's "Tiled". It's not perfect and needs way more development, but I'll share the code when it's "stable". (We still have some glitches when it comes to collision detection). So it'll be more or less a 2d-character-walks-on-multiple-layer-tile-maps-framework... :)
