[RECODED (INDEV)] Explorers of Light/Explorers of Shadow

Post by NightKawata »

What do you have here?

Welcome to the forum page for one of my current experiments, Explorers of Light/Explorers of Shadow. (These are both working titles.)
I will be trying my best to keep you updated as best I can, no 100% guarantees, however. (More like 90%)

In other words, this page will be a base of operations, of some sort.

What is Explorers of Light/Explorers of Shadow?
Pretty much a Roguelike inspired Adventure game. It's set with a top down perspective, and it's playable for the most part right now.
Remember the titles are pretty much working titles, so they're not final.

In fact, the game is in an alpha state, so it's not near prototype at all yet.

What does it look like?

New HUD, more open environment. Not only will it be easier to make a level editor for, but it's also more customizable! (Tech stuff that'll bore you)

The Inventory Screen was given a fresh coat of paint, pauses the game now, and shows you where you're at. Fun, huh?

Now that you've shown us that, what do you want?

I'd like a little amount of assistance for this thing. If you can do 8 bit NES era graphics, that would be great. The same goes for 8 bit NES era music. (If so desired we could discuss higher bitdepth graphics, but that is for later.)
I'm not exactly, hmm, good at graphic or music production.

What's been done?
So far, here's what's been done:
-Movement
-Tile Based and Entity Based collision
-Camera system
-Inventory system
-Basics of a Combat system
-Monsters and Items
-Different maps
-Much more smaller stuff that I forgot.

Where can we get the game? (NEW)
Explorers of Light (0210 @ 1321).love
Updated for Build 0210, including the massive recode.

Here's Build 0210! Not too much to explore right now, but it does work, and it's recoded!

How do we play it?
Left Button: Left Key
Right Button: Right Key
Up Button: Up Key
Down Button: Down Key
A Button: Z
B Button: X
Start Button: Return
Select Button: Right Shift

Does getting to Level 3 break the game like I heard?
In Build 0206 and below, yes.
No, I fixed that in Build 0207. Believe it or not, that was one of the first changes.

Is it cross-compatible?
Seeing as how I can run it fine on both Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.10, I do not see why not.
Even quamaretto/jmillikan can run the game on Mac, so you should be good.

What next?
Well, I'm done here. Feel free to comment/spam/watch porn be civilized now.
Any kind of feedback would be greatly appreciated at this moment, but I doubt that'll happen. So yeah.

It looks cool from the screenshots, but when I press K to select start, the screen goes blank and nothing happens.

Whoops. Updated the original post in regards to that.
The title screen isn't bugged or anything, but it doesn't run any code in it at all. (Check the source's title.lua, there's only bare bones code)

But yeah, select the "Game ->" state instead on the dev menu (The screen you get when you first boot the game) and you should be good.
(0210: Again, sorry for the bump, but the massive recode was finished, and the newest build is ready. I won't be purposely bumping this anymore until beta or alpha is released, or if I get shot, whichever comes first.)
