you dont, the idea of a transparent color is really a holdover from the 80's, today we just make whatever we want transparent with an alpha channel in a paint program and save the image

That is, a paint program that doesn't suck. mspaint, for example, won't help you here.

I strongly suggest the gimp (or paint.net if your on a windows machine and feel like fiddling with a program thats basicly mspaint with a handful of features shot gunned in it)

When i coding .... long time ago .... Sprites has worked whith color for invisible part.
I dont know alpha channel , but i go read about this.
