Mac or Pc?

Post by veethree »

I'm not here to start a debate over which is better, Just seeking some advice.

So recently i realized it was time for me to get a new laptop, My old one is quite literally falling apart. And since i recently acquired a pretty good amount of money (lost license, sold car), I thought maybe i'd get a mac..see what the big deal is.

Seeing as I've been a PC user my whole life, I was wondering how hard it'd be to get used to the new OS and such, So if any of you have switched from pc to mac, I'd love some information on that.

Another thing I'm wondering is if it's really worth the money, I mean the cheapest macbook pro is significantly more expensive than my desktop which has pretty decent specs. But money isn't really an issue, so that's not a huge concern for me.

And one last thing, Is using löve on a mac any different than PC? I watched some tutorial on löve a while back, and the dude was on a mac, and he zipped the game everytime before running it, Is that necessary on macs? Cause on pc i usually just drag and drop the folder onto love.exe.

this is the best advice i can : never buy a mac (if you want to know why, send me a MP cause i don't want to troll here)

if you are ready to change your habits, buy the first PC you want (or even a computer without windows if you can) and install linux. it's free and making game with love is easy as than with another OS

the difference are no worth choosing one or another. it's just harder (as i know) to rename file extension on windows 7 because you must find the option for
and yes, you must zip files in order to get a .love file but you don't have to do that for develloping because you instead use system/IDE shortcuts to quickly launch love from folder

sorry for syntaxic suffer

I've used both a mac and a pc (with ubuntu). My new computer is a MacBook Air 13'. I like that it's very thin, the battery lasts a lot, and it's quite powerful (for its size). It takes a bit to get used to, but it's nice. How much you feel at home with it depends on you - I advise you to go try a mac and some friend's home to see if you like it.

The workflow is pretty similar.

But I warn you: drag-and-dropping the zip/folder to the executable is ... tedious. A much, much better approach consists on having a terminal open on the folder where your game is and executing this:

Code: Select all

love .
(The love executable must be in your PATH for this to work).
When I write def I mean function.

I'm an atypical computer user: I have a Thinkpad L512 with Xubuntu 12.04 (Linux) installed. I don't recommend Mac/PC users try to take on my setup. Only other Linux users would be interested in what I'm doing.

But I do love my setup. :)

Mac. So much Mac. Love Mac. But I hate arguments like this. Buy what you like. Buy what you prefer. But remember this, with the right software, a Mac user can have the best of both worlds. (As I do. Parallels with Windows 7 is amazing. Windows for gaming and testing. OS X for actually living my life.)

LOL. It's not rocket surgery. Did you have a mouse with buttons? Was it a single button mouse? Was it a no button mouse? Was it a trackpad? Either way, it's so simple it should be illegal.

Two button mouse: Right button.
One button mouse: Hold Control while clicking.
Zero button mouse: (Magic Mouse) It's touch-based so clicking with one or two fingers will do left or right. And there's gestures.
Magic Trackpad: One finger to click. Two to right-click. Drag two fingers to scroll.

You really should give it another look see. Seems you gave up too easily.

Different desktop environment for the most part. Standard Ubuntu uses Unity (bigass buttons down the left side), where as Xubuntu comes with XFCE which is like a fairly trimmed down version of windows 95/98/XP. I'd like to try out Kubuntu (KDE) in 13.04, to see how its come since I last tested out out a few years ago.

There's a lot of fine details about how all of the linux desktop environments differ. Some people tend to just mix-and-match from each until they get exactly what they want, in terms of window decorations, movements, shortcut keys, etc.

A big advantage the Pc have over Mac is the numbers and numbers of applications for it, But i prefere Ubuntu which has an application called Wine that runs almost every windows application.

The application count advantage is not that big a deal. OS X has numerous equivalents to most of the most popular Windows apps. Sometimes they're even better than their counterparts. And all the important apps are cross-platform anyway. This is 2013, not 1999.

The only advantage Windows has is games. In which case you still have the option to run Windows when you want to play.

Therefore it all comes down to which OS you actually prefer using day to day. This part cannot be argued because everyone has different preferences, or is used to doing something one way and won't consider the other way because it's too different or hard to get used to.

Me, personally, I found it very easy to switch to Mac back when it was still OS 9. OS X was cake after that. But then again I had been looking for a way out of that abusive relationship for a few years at that point.
