I just realized it's because if your character isn't moving it defaults to the idle image, which is only facing right. What I suggest is to create all of your character images facing one direction. When the character faces the other way then flip the images with a -1 X scaling. It would save you from making duplicate images and would be easier to manage.

I adjusted your game to show what I'm talking about.
