Wulcan [LD23]

Post by leafo »

Figured I'd make a topic for my Ludum Dare game. It's called Wulcan. It's a really simple shmup.

You fly a ship with two guns, one that kills enemies and one that pushes back the ever closing walls when it hits an enemy. You have to balance between killing enemies and preventing the walls from crushing you. You can grab gun powerups and health packs dropped by some enemies.

There's not much content I admit, ran out of time, but I think the concept is pretty fun and it repeats forever. I might spend some time adding more levels, enemies, and guns.

Download here:
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-da ... w&uid=4321

Read the directions before playing because there aren't any in the game.

The source is here: https://github.com/leafo/ludum-dare-23

The music is oddly serene. I think a change to something more ominous or fast paced would really change the whole atmosphere for the better, but that's just a personal gripe.

I didn't read the instructions the first few times, but after reading them the two gun mechanic is pretty cool and unique. It really forces you to concentrate on what you're doing and how you fly, especially since the secondary gun doesn't seem to damage enemy ships.

Very neat, keep up the good work.

Can you show me where the nuclear wessels are? lolol

I like that it's 3D. It's nice to see other people are just as interested in simple 3D support/features for Löve as well.

Ah, a couple of people have told me about this error I'm not sure what causes it.

Can you try running this version of the game: http://leafo.net/dump/wulcan-dev-win32.zip

I turned on love's release mode in the ludum dare version to see how it worked, but it's stupid because now no can tell me why the game is crashing because the error message is being hidden. I used a pixel effect to do the background and I have a feeling that your graphics card doesn't support it, but I'd like to see the stack trace.

This is strangely similar to a project I'm working on with someone else.

Well done with the game I love it :D

Keep up the good work, it's good to see more Love2d entries in Ludum.

It should still be dumped on the console, I think. In any case, the default release error handler is very barebones, and is probably something you'll want to replace.

Maybe something like I use for Space: if it crashes, the window looks pretty much like the default release error handler, but it tells you to press the space-bar for the full trace-back.
