The problem with multiplayer is that it should have a server to show games and players connected. Even if games themselves were hosted by players (Counter Strike style). And, for people who don't have a dedicated server, it's quite bad to pay it every month for the few bandwidth and players that may have (I've gone through this dilemma myself) :|

You do have to remember this is Alpha stage, there will be a master server in the end result. I can imagine no one would play the game if they had to forward a port on there router in order to host a game. I'm planning on using a Master server to list hosts, and this will allow me to hole punch so I don't need to require port forwarding.

My concern isn't what FSF or OSI think, its what I think. It still limits the audience that views the source, thus not being completely open.

Why would it limit the audience? If someone bought the game, they could pass on the source to their friends, that's how it works. If you find that too limiting, you could even have a free source download link on your website.
