What Code Editor Should I Use?

Post by XTUX345 »

Hello!

I'm rather new at game development, and I plan on using Love for my first project.

However, I cannot decide what code editor I should use for the project.

Which one should I use?

Thanks.

EDIT:I'm using a mac, in case that helps at all.

Many Windows users favor Notepad++. I think SCiTE was popular in Linux? And I have no idea about Mac.
Earliest Love2D supporter who can't Love anymore. Let me disable pixel shaders if I don't use them, dammit!
Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet, built like a tank. But not fancy enough for Love2D 0.10.0+.

That's really a shame, since I'm currently using a mac.

Textmate is good, but isn't free. Sublime Text 2 is better, and while it's not free you can use the beta / developer version for free. I've heard Textwrangler is alright too, and it's free.

OK, so I've decided to go with either Sublime Text 2 or TExtWrangler.

Have any of you tried either of these with Love?

Sublime Text 2 with Love package instaled is quite good for Lua/LOVE and is probably the best choice for OSX at the moment.
App http://www.sublimetext.com/2
Package http://www.sublimetext.com/forum/viewto ... 82&p=17267 or http://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4054

As also (free) alternative you have TextWrangler http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/
Free open-source Smultron is old but is clean, simple and easy (http://sourceforge.net/projects/smultron/). New Smultron 4 is now paid (http://www.peterborgapps.com/smultron/)
Fraise is better Smulton built from original open source https://github.com/jfmoy/Fraise

You can also have the excellent TextMate but you will have to pay a lot more. And you also have LOVE support there

If you use some Win Virtual Machine in Mac why not also consider any of Win editors? You can use Seamless Mode in VirtualBox or Unity Mode in Vmware Fusion and work with that editors very comfortable in Mac side. I do sometimes that.

gedit is simple but very good (and presintalled usually) on Linux. It recognizes Lua without any modification too. Maybe there's a Mac port?
