Legally, he can't use the Mario trademark at all. That said, it has already been used a million times. So I doubt anything is going to happen as long as he treats it with respect and keeps it uncommercial.kingslovelua wrote:this person that makes mari0 must be the ish but he can really sell the games on his site wouldn't there be some type of copyright issues or is he doing all of it for fun/ resume

Re: So anyone played minecraft yet
Well, I think even if they told him to stop, he could easily change the graphics to some other generic platformer character and keep the gameplay the same. Mario clones are a dime a dozen. It would just be another generic clone instead of an homage.
That said, I don't think anything bad will happen to the project. At least not at first. Hopefully never. I can't wait to play it. I bet if he had to stop making it, he'd just remove the graphics and offer the code to anyone who wanted it. It's really just the graphics that Nintendo would have a problem with. Hopefully since he's not selling it, he won't have a problem like the 2D Ocarina remake had.

I follow the mari0 blog, and am very excited for a playable release
Maybe not bigger than minecraft, but it will be fun nonetheless.

Nothing will ever be as big as Minecraft for a long time. Even Super Meat Boy, but it could probably get pretty popular. If Nintendo notices and shows anger, I say just change the graphics to a generic platformer but keep the engine. They can't stop a Mario-clone that doesn't actually use Mario.josefnpat wrote:I follow the mari0 blog, and am very excited for a playable release

Can't wait to see what he shows off tomorrow. I wish he'd stop by the forum. I'd have created a MariO topic, but it would be nice if he did it himself maybe when it's done.
