Look at other people's code, but more importantly, write your own code. We have a handful of tutorials on the wiki, they're good starting places for doing experiments that will help you learn. The books, at least in my experience, are more helpful for helping you not misunderstand, rather than making you understand in the first place (I hope that sentence makes sense).
