Yeah, the Chinese is indeed difficult to learn, but you can study it by analogy

For example, "Hello" is equivalent to "你好", spelled "ni hao"

I very pleased to encounter who learn Chinese, learning pleasure! ;)

RPGs are fairly simple to program (as opposed to, say, a shooter), however, they generally require a lot more content (music, maps, characters (which probably have animations), lists of random encounters, items and all their stats, and, of course, all the dialogue...). Do you have other people to help you with all that content, or do you plan on trying to do it all yourself?

JavaScript is, in my personal opinion, inferior to Lua. As you get more familiar with Lua, you'll find yourself wishing JS was more flexible. But once you un-learn some of your JS habits, Lua should be pretty easy for you.
Earliest Love2D supporter who can't Love anymore. Let me disable pixel shaders if I don't use them, dammit!
Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet, built like a tank. But not fancy enough for Love2D 0.10.0+.

I've been writing JS for years. Recently I am developing a js-implemented, js-targeted compiler called Eisa, runs on node. All them (incl. js & lua) are great. The "language war" is endless.

Maybe another backend?
