Hi! I'm hacked. I found love after googling "2d game engine". It's awesome.

So my recently discovered method of learning is to "boil down" masterfully created games. Like Unrequited, from the "games" category on the wiki. Exactly what I was looking for as far as a platforming engine. I just want to figure out how the programmer did the jumping and animating and learn from there.

What do you think about this technique, master proggers?

Considering everyone codes differently, that could be a good or bad idea. It all depends on how you code.
No doubt you'll pick up on some tips and tricks through the process though. I've just found looking at finished project's code is a bit mind boggling trying to parse through it quickly.

Welcome to the forums!
As above, I find working out smaller problems and building them up is easier than looking at finished code and trying to work out what each bit does and why.
But at the same time, you can learn a lot from looking at how other people approach similar problems.

I myself was lucky enough to have someone who lived with me take a lot of 1 on 1 time to teach me LOVE and Lua. The best thing you can do is try things for yourself. If you look at what others have done and try to implement it in a unique way or put your own twist on it you can learn very fast. I've been working with LOVE for over a year and am finally starting to get the hang of how to make something on my own.

You'll find the forums and the IRC channel very supportive if you ask specific questions and provide as much information as possible. Good luck with LOVE!
