I'm writing a book about love game engine

Post by taksan »

Hello everybody. I'm new in this forum and new to Lua, but I need to learn it and the best way to learn it I think is by making a game :)

So, I'll be doing a game with [love] engine! and in parallel I'll be doing a "beginner's guide" book about it so I'm looking for comments and feedback from all of you (or maybe somebody already did one?). Keep in mind that it is a basic book so I can't include topics like "Networking".

You can download the outline of the book I'm planning for love game engine from here:

http://hotfile.com/dl/94433150/07ec87f/ ... e.pdf.html

Sorry for the "hotfile" link, it is the only alternative I have right now for sharing the file with you.

I already did a book for another game engine, you can download it free from here:

http://code.google.com/p/lucu/downloads/list

(get the PDF called "lucu")

And I'm also working on another book for another engine called "Java Monkey Engine"

Regards,
Taksan

Interesting. Reading through your outline right now. Right off the bat, it seems well-structured. There are some things that are incorrect or dubious (you don't need a good CPU, Lua is bundled with LÖVE, you don't need opengl >=2.X, LÖVE isn't an engine but a framework) though. You might also want to have some more informative titles. For example "please call me back" could be a subtitle or something, but the actual title would be "Callbacks".

Keep us updated and feel free to ask questions. The chatroom (#love on freenode) is full of friendly people.

True, but who really cares about the distinction?

EDIT: my own pedantics: it's not "love" or "löve" but "LÖVE", and appending "game engine" at every mention gets tiresome.

For example, in the table of contents:

Code: Select all

Chapter 1: So you want to be a game developer?
    What it takes
    Introducing LÖVE
Free love // this one and the one below are acceptable, because they are just puns, and do not refer to LÖVE directly
    Show us some love
Inspiration stories: Interview with a maker of a game done with LÖVE
    Summary
Chapter 2: Start your engines
    How to get LÖVE
Installation of LÖVE // or better: Installing LÖVE or even: Installation, because it's pretty clear by now you're talking about LÖVE
Making sure the installation is ok
Inspiration stories: Interview with a maker of a game done with LÖVE
    Summary
etc.
Help us help you: attach a .love.

Well, I think it does matter because if you say it's an engine, people go: "How do I create a game entity?", etc. Saying that it's an engine can make people expect it to have everything but the kitchen sink, when the whole idea behind LÖVE is keeping it simple.

EDIT: my own pedantics: it's not "love" or "löve" but "LÖVE", and appending "game engine" at every mention gets tiresome.

etc.[/quote]
