BrawlQuest: The Rewrite

Post by Pebsie »

Hi all,

I just wanted to post an update on my project BrawlQuest. It's been almost two years since I first posted on here about the game and I've had bursts of extreme productivity and sloughs of "not a single commit in 4 months".

When I started the project I was entering my 1st year at University and when I was ready to post something about it I was entering my 2nd year at University. It's been 3 years since I wrote the first lines of code and - 3 years of higher education later - I have only one thing to say when going to update it:

oh god what was wrong with me

As some people pointed out in the BrawlQuest discord in those early days a lot of the code was garbage and even back then I was aware of it: the game was originally an experiment that turned into a full project. There are some stupid things like how the live server handles basically everything and there wasn't even a proper API and database until a few months ago when I first tried salvaging the work.

Meanwhile I've been pitching the game at a student enterprise grant thing and got awarded a hefty budget for marketing.

So, a month ago I decided it was time to stop delaying the game over and over again and commit to a rewrite.
So, two days ago, I finished my degree. So, as of yesterday, the rewrite has begun.

I'll modify this thread at some point to represent the usual blahblah advertisement that I've been doing for my projects for years. Until that day I'll be posting updates on my blog and if y'all are feeling generous you can add the game to your Steam wishlists.

I can't guarantee that I'll be sticking to that August 26th release date but I can guarantee that I'll be running some testing before then that it'd be ace to have some lovers on board with.

To the future! :nyu:

Awesome! I really hope you'd spice the combat up however, I found that very lacking in the previous version.
What's the purpose of that student grant thing? Is there a milestone to hit with that marketing budget or..?

Hey Kayle! Cheers. The combat system got better when you started getting spells but in the Alpha that took a while. I definitely am going to think about ways of making it more interesting. The student grant is a competition from my University's SU to fund an amount towards a business venture. Some info about my time is available here. No milestone; I've got free reign to spend it how I please but will be having monthly meetings with an advisor.
