As the number of github users I think use git will active more game programmers to contribute love2d.
An official mirror-repo on github may helps love2d more greater.
I would love to see a conversion of the source code repository from mercurial to git. I think github as a hoster is a rather bad idea as most free software projects are moving away from it. I would rather see GitLab or similiar.

Besides, GitHub is or will soon be owned by MS. I've already closed all my repos there and I will be leaving it probably by the end of this year.
I don't think MS will do some evil things to github user's repo, have a giant company may help github better.
I do also use bitbucket and gitlab with my friends and colleagues.
You can auto sync your git repo to gitlab or bitbucket, that's very convenience.

Yes, git community is more activity, that's can help love2d to evolve.
At least have a official repo mirror, github users can post issue like google's golang mirror repo (now that's not mirror only).

By the time what they do affects users directly, it will already be too late.
I don't mean to suggest that Microsoft is worthy of our blind trust, but the example you provided seems rather benign. So GitHub is getting a feature that its competitors have. That seems like a normal, healthy, competitive market, not an attempt at suffocating the other platforms. Also, because git (like Mercurial) is distributed, all of the code and history of the project would be safely contained in everyone's clones. Basically, even if Microsoft stamps out open source repositories, every single contributer would have the means to upload the entire project to another platform.
Just my 2 cents.
