Why is there a lack of documentation of older versions?

Post by zac352 »

0.5.0 is the oldest version which has a wiki page. Did a server die or something a long, long time ago? :o:

The documentation for versions up to 0.5.0 never were on the wiki.

According to http://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... 2506#p2506, the idea of even having a wiki is two years old. According to http://love2d.org/w/index.php?title=Mai ... on=history, the wiki in its current form did not exist until 14 February this year.

The documentation for 0.6.0 was originally going to be in a home-grown semi-wiki documentation system, called Potato. It was a bit of a mess, so the documentation was exported to the wiki.

I would suggest that in the future, we create a solution that allows you to switch between 'views' in the wiki. That way you could have multiple versions of for example love.graphics.print, one for each version of Löve. Ideally you should also be able to have views inherit pages from other views, in case the syntax hasn't changed between different versions.

I believe this to be absolutely vital in the future (though it kind of is already). I'm sure there are plenty of people using Löve 0.5.0, because that's what's in Debian and Ubuntu. Despite that, the documentation currently available is a mishmash of 0.6.2 and 0.7.0. If you continue to change syntax to existing modules (and you should, seeing as how we're not at 1.0 yet), there should be a way to keep supporting the older versions.

I should really get to installing Ubuntu over the Fedora on this computer... :P

Anyway, the wiki is kind of annoying to use sometimes. And I go on it for absolutely no reason sometimes. I pull little experiments out of it. :neko:

It looks almost the same.. O_O
What's potato? Is there some archived thing of it?

I can't really explain it more clearly than I have already done. I don' t think there is any archive of it, other than perhaps one on rude's HD. (Or maybe TechnoCat, who seems to have everything.)

The current wiki is pretty dang close to an archive of potato.

Well, yeah. Go back to the very first revision of most 0.6 era documentation pages, you'll see "Imported from potato" in the edit message.
