love.conf has an option to specify version of love to use with a game, you can parse for that. Also, for convienance of handling multiple versions of love, I'd say to check out scoop.sh. It's a system for PowerShell to handle easy installation of a lot of things and I've gotten love into their extras bucket, and old versions of love into their versions bucket.
