You should definitely use love.filesystem, yeah. Behaviour of io may be unpredictable (as you see).
lf = love.filesystem
ls = love.sound
la = love.audio
lp = love.physics
lt = love.thread
li = love.image
lg = love.graphics

Not really, the library I found uses IO. I'll look into fixing this... Could it be that the working directory is actually inside the .app, next to the love file? I've no idea how mac .apps actually work.
