Audio Game Demo - Zombie Doom

Post by JesseH »

Hi,

A few hours ago, a conversation with a friend regarding his MUD and the growing number of blind people that have been enjoying his game recently sparked interest in games that those that are blind can enjoy. I looked around and couldn't find anything that was easily accessible online, which was fairly frustrating.

I decided to attempt to create my own game that blind people can play. The result is called Zombie Doom, which is one game in a hopeful series of games I've titled UnGraphix. So please enjoy, and offer your suggestions and criticisms below. To save you the trouble, the code was thrown together in a couple of hours. There is no need for code review currently, because I do not plan on updating this game.

Controls
ASWD - Movement
Arrow Keys - Shooting (in the obvious directions)

How To Play
Move around, and shoot. Zombies are there, you just can't see them! You will get warnings of the general direction of zombies that are near by. Use the sounds available to you to visualize the world in your mind. The world, however, is very simple, so this can get boring fairly quickly.

I'm glad to see people interested in making games for blind people. I know there was talk on the forums previously about filters for color-blind people as well.

You said your friend's MUD is popular with blind people. I assume they use refreshable braille displays. Did your friend have to import any libraries or program anything on his end for this to be possible, or is that at the OS or device driver level?

I believe most are using screen readers currently. He mentioned writing something to keep everything text. I imagine having your screen reader read a list of dashes that were used for formatting a list could get quite annoying!
