AMD's new mantle Graphics API improved alot of stuff over other graphics APIs (less CPU overhead) now AMD have given Khronus (the maintainers of OpenGL) full access to the Mantle source so they can take inspiration from it for the next version of OpenGL. If Khronus decides to make the next version of OpenGL similar to mantle it will seriously improve performance with OpenGL.

And OS X is still on 4.1.
So I guess we'll get 5.0 support in about 5 years.
