Question about multi-posting!

Post by Jeeper »

Hello!

Now I do understand that spamming in a thread with things such as "Hello?, anyone?" "please someone?" is against the rules. But if you have a dedicated thread about a project of yours (like I have here: http://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... 7&start=20) is it okay to sometimes double or tripple post as long as it actually has something new?

Take that thread as an example, if no one replies to it before I have made the demo version for Luminosity, can I then make a new reply with the demo and therefor bumping the thread or is that against the rules?

IIRC, we've sort of settled on this: multi-posting is only OK if you have both new, significant information to bring into the thread, and enough time has passed. If you have new information but you just posted to the same thread two hours ago and it's still the last one? Just edit your last post to have the new information in it (preferably with something that says you added it in later, like "EDIT:" or whatevs).

What is enough time? That isn't really clear. I'd say a week, but others might put the boundary sooner or later, though I doubt anyone (anyone important, at least) will think it's okay to double-post within a day.

Too many noobies have been known to post then post again because no one replied within a few hours, before the thread has even moved down a few slots or gotten anywhere near the bottom of the first page.

You don't need to bump a thread so soon unless, like mentioned above, there is significant new info and it has been a long enough time. Otherwise edit the post.

If it's a help thread, posting multiple times isn't going to make anyone help you any faster. If no one has an answer, no one is going to answer. If it leaves the first page or moves down far enough to warrant a bump, then bump it. But not within the same day. This isn't a super busy forum like NeoGAF. Threads will remain on the front page for a few days at least. And even if they move to the second, the software marks any new posts and threads with an easy to see colored icon.

If its your own project thread and you're posting new info, I see no problem with bumping your own thread with a lot of new updates.

But bumping it just to say "No one is interested in my cool project?" is a no-no I'd say. Only bump if it's changed a lot. Not to see if people missed it. Unless it's been a week and no one has downloaded or replied to your (supposedly finished project) thread.
