@Garbeld: I run your test on my laptop and i get this.

My Machine: i7 M620@2.67Ghz,
Processors 4
RenderInfos OpenGL 2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2622 Intel Intel(R) HD Graphics

Mode, FPS
0 - ~617
1 - ~500
2 - ~680
3 - ~700
4 - ~704
5 - ~680
6 - ~702

It seems to me like a OGL driver issue.

Yeah, that's pretty weird. What does love.graphics.getRendererInfo output? There's a chance that Microsoft's OpenGL software renderer is being used instead of your video card.
That... would make a lot of sense, from what I know. I'm surprised I hadn't thought of it.

Update your drivers, what video card brand are you using ?
