[LD29] One Cold Night

Post by hyouko »

Hello, all! A bit late to the party here, but seeing as it was made with LÖVE, I figured I'd share my Ludum Dare 29 Jam entry, One Cold Night. It's a simple (but rather hard, if the feedback I've received so far is to be believed) experience.

Search out the three survivors buried in the snow by searching for their scents and listening for responses to your barks. You'll need to find buried food, too, to keep your strength up through the search.

You can find it and play it here.

My recommendation would probably be to play the post-compo version (.love file here), but if you want to experience the original extra-hard/buggy flavor, that's available too.

Let me know what you think!

LOVED IT :D
It feels like it's 3D and I loved the graphics, the snow and the light were so awesome, great work

Great work. I spend some time playing this game and I like it a lot.
I found a little issue while searching for things. I discovered that stuff can spawn outside of the walkable area.

Apart from that I think some good graphics could be added for everything in the game to enhance the feeling of the game.

Do you mind adding a short explanation to what the game is about to the first post?

I'll see if I can plug in a fix for that. Something is definitely wacky with my map generation code on just the far right-hand side, and I'm not quite sure what it is. Graphics-wise, I'm not much of an artist, but I'll see if I can whip up some actual sprites for the vegetation, food, and rocks.

Added a quick explanation of the mechanics to the first post; hope that helps!

If you want some help with the graphics I could see what I can do. :)
Are you going to continue with the project?

I'm going to keep working on it, at least until I add in some of the mechanics I'd planned but didn't have time for during the jam. Might just ping you about graphics in the future if you're up for it.

I spent some time this afternoon trying to add in proper trees:

This looks OK in stills, but it doesn't play very nicely with my super-hacky z-ordering solution, and the perspective is off (they 'float' over the surface of the snow once uncovered). Going to play around with it some more and see if I can get something that I like better - possibly trees based on voxel 'segments' that will work better with aforementioned z-ordering.
