Hello, my name is Norubal, I'm novice game developer, I made few study works, but those are not great.
I love designing and developing games, I think it's my vocation.
I'm just rookie now, but I have great desire. I want to be full-time indie game developer, but I don't want to starving indie game developer.
This is my question: I'm novice. I want to be a indie game developer, and I want to make a living same time. I have ambition, but I don't have experience and skills, where to start?
I don't want correct answer, I want to hear everyone's comment. thanks for reading my thread.
have a nice day!
Life as indie game developer: where to start?
Re: Life as indie game developer: where to start?
Make a game you'd want to play if it was made by someone else.
For experience: pick any random gameplay mechanic, make a primitive demo around it. Can be as simple as walking around. Most of what you'll code will be garbage that will only help you learn.

You should start by making some Flash/HTML5 game and putting them on website like Kongregate and earn money off that. Then use that money to fund a bigger game.
PM me on here or elsewhere if you'd like to discuss porting your game to Nintendo Switch via mazette!

Also check if there's subsidies available in your area, and find other indie developers in your area to hang out with and network with. There's probably a lot of people with the same ideas and they'll have lots of helpful advice.

I am not sure that market is very lucrative at all these days.Davidobot wrote:You should start by making some Flash/HTML5 game and putting them on website like Kongregate and earn money off that. Then use that money to fund a bigger game.

Thanks for replys. making good game will be crucial of course.. I'm skeptical about CPM/CPC advertise, I read thread of TIGSource a while ago, some people said it worked, and other people said it didn't worked.

I do not understand much about it, but on the site Gamejolt, there is a feature called "Ad Revenue Sharing", in which developers of games registered on the site can get 30% of the ad sharing revenue for their games and blogs.
I do not know if it's something really lucrative for developers, but... it is an option.
