Avalanche Escape, a simple ski game...

Post by Cucurbitacée »

Hello everyone,

I spent the last week toying with version 0.9.0 and the result is here:

Avalanche Escape

As you can see, there is a bit of black humour in it. I hope no one will be offended. :|

Anyway, here are the features:
  • Infinite downhill trying to escape an avalanche.
  • Two characters available, a skier who is faster but can't turn well and a snowboarder who can turn hard but has low speed.
  • Optional blizzard that will make the game harder to play as the time goes on.
  • "Grinding" system where you are awarded point if you are close from an obstacle. Grinding points will double every 10 seconds, so high speed one are very valuable even if they are very dangerous.
You control the character with left and right arrow keys. The high is only kept as long as the game is open.
There was no intention behind it beside me wanting to go back to coding a few months after my first experience. But if you have any comment, advice, or critic, I'd be glad to hear about them.

I don't see the black humor..

EDIT: Unless that guy is that racecar driver or whatever that had a skiing accident. As for the game, Plays pretty nicely. Graphics remind me of old flash games i used to play when i was a kid.

Yep, that's funny. That rescue dog game over screen is great too.

I second this. Currently it's counterintuitive.

Also the tree-collision is a bit off. From a perspective view: You explode before you even touch the trunks.

/edit: reversed it. My highscore is 973
That's something I planned to add first in the option but didn't as all the friends I gave the game to try were good with the actual layout. If I continue to work on it, I will add it.

I guess as I live in Germany it seems to me that everybody would recognize Michael Schumacher. If you don't know who he is, he was 7 times world champion of Formula 1 and is now in coma after a common ski accident. There's a bit of irony of it when you think at all the time he was in danger during his whole career.
I did the graphics for the skier, the snowboarder and the speed/distance monitor. Everything else comes from OpenGameArt.org.

I think that's because the trees are viewed from a certain angle and the character is viewed from above. At first I wanted to draw sprites in the same style as the obstacles, if I continue working on it, that's something I will try to do.

Thanks everyone for the answers and the appreciation. :3

Thanks. :) No, I can't even understand how music works, less doing some. It comes from http://maf464.com.

Why don't you just turn the whole thing by 180 degrees?

I think it would be less obvious this way. We are used to gravity and it make sense that if the movement goes from top to bottom it means going down. But in term of gameplay, it wouldn't make much difference, I guess.

Nice but...i suggest you to remove the dependency to m.schumacher from the game. Sorry, but his accident is not humor.
