Blocks of Tyme: a challenging puzzle platformer

Post by Syca »

So I didn't exactly enter the ludum dare, I just did the theme and worked to see if I could even do it.(I think I can, and will enter the next one) But this is what I made:

Blocks of Tyme is a "puzzle" Platformer, you only have split second to jump else the platform falls and you can't jump to the next one. There are other gameplay stuff in there that add to the "puzzle" part, avoiding saying to not spoil anything!

There are only ten levels.
The exit door is the brown rectangle, the platforms are grey and you are purplish.

Controls are listed in game.

Let me know what you think! I had fun making this and i might make more levels because I think the game is somewhat fun to me. Also I don't believe there is any obvious bugs, if you notice anything let me know.

Not overly fond of the level design, this was my first time doing levels like this. I think I could have made more and made them more varied and progressively more difficult. I somewhat think I made some levels harder than others, some being early game. Also so things are probably "hacky" or done in a "wrong" way.

I think your game doesn't work well on different framerates, how do you measure 1 second?
Really? It should be the same framerate on most computers. Granted I only tested that on three different computers. Also the one second may be a lie, I have bad time telling skills. If it falls as soon as you touch it, then it's working fine. Guess I should change it to "you only have one split second to jump"

Do you mean on level 9? Because if so that makes sense. I have it set up to close when you get to the final exit, mostly because I kept using borderless windows. Did you perhaps accidentally hit esc or q?

I updated the game, now it won't close at the end, it'll just do nothing. Also changed the wording about the one second thing, and 'q' won't close the game either.

It's a great game idea, but I found it relatively hard to play.
For me, the blocks break as soon as I stand on them, there's no one-second-delay (if that's what you mean by the one second thing - at first, I thought you meant that the player dies if he stands still for one second)
I find it really hard to jump from a breaking block. The timing of when you press the button needs to be pressed exactly at the right time (I usually get it too early). This could be a good game mechanic, but it's not really working well yet - it seems a little random.
If you improve this a little more, this might be a really nice game!

Thanks for the kind words!

As for the delay, I did change the wording on that(I think a second is shorter than it really is). But I will increase the delay, but not to much. I do like the difficulty of it right now, but I am biased as I can nearly do it all perfect now. Still not as hard as IWBTG though. I'll probably make easier levels for the beginning and add more levels with different blocks.

I updated the game. The falling doesn't happen the instant you touch it, and you can jump off it while it's falling (depending how far below you it is).
Prettied up other things, like the font and added a help and win popup, also added a toggle-able parallax (temp)background.
Had to tweak some levels to work right with the new falling time. There is now ten levels.
