Canvases in LÖVE 0.9.0 have slightly lower system requirements, so it's possible your computer will be able to use them in the new version.

How old does a computer have to be in order to not support canvases? because my 6 year old laptop (that is usually a dust collector) does the trick without breaking a sweat.

Depends on the quality of the video card mostly. If you only have an on-board card (for a work computer for example) it's less likely to work than if your machine is equipped with a dedicated video card for playing games.

canvas aren't that necessary, just remember only to draw visible stuff

The primary uses for Canvases have nothing to do with performance. It's true that many of the possible effects which use them can be considered not essential to gameplay for most games, though.

Realistically speaking, most non-LÖVE commercial games these days (indie / 2D or otherwise) do require support for them.

My PC is 10 years old, and i used the integrated card for most of the time. I recieved an old MST card from a friend, that is slightly better that the integrated one.

Amazing game.
I was doing very well, and had made a portal, went through it, opened a chest that was sitting there, and:

Other than that, movement and looking around need to be slower.

All in all, great game.
