All day yesterday I was working on a little project I'd had in mind since the early turn of the century. It's a simulation game. I won't tell you what exactly it is though. Try to guess based on this screenshot...
It's a work in progress and I'm not even sure I can finish it, but I will damn sure try.
I think it's pretty obvious what it is. But it's an idea I had way back when the Tycoon games were really big. Especially Roller Coaster Tycoon. Except this is a smaller scale.

I think it's something along the lines of Landlord Tycoon. The gray squares are probably dorm rooms or something.
At least that's my guess.

It reminded me of a school map, that can't be good, but yeah, who rents classrooms?

What? LOL You guys are way off. Robin was the closest. It's a mall. Shopping mall. I'm designing a Mall Tycoon style game. You buy a piece of land and build a mall on it. Set up the store slots and rent them to franchises that want to move in. You will be able to set it up however you want. And eventually have multiple floors. If I am able to handle it that is. The prototype you see now is pretty good so far. I actually built a prototype a year ago in QuickBASIC that had a monetary system in place for the most part.
You'll be able to decorate it however you want including ponds and plants down the center of the "aisles" or escalators/stairways. I'm also going to put people in that come based on what you have, and they'll wander around like normal people (Roller Coaster Tycoon did this) and if they have problems finding what they need, they will let you know.
I don't know exactly how being a landlord for a mall would work money-wise. But I'll do my best. I assume when a mall opens and rents out a store space, it costs a certain amount depending on how large it is. Like an anchor, i.e. the big ones at the ends, would cost more per month than a smaller store and a kiosk would be cheapest. I never looked into how much it would cost to rent a space in a mall.

Heh, yeah. (Guys: it said “stores” right there in the screenshot )Jasoco wrote:What? LOL You guys are way off. Robin was the closest. It's a mall. Shopping mall. I'm designing a Mall Tycoon style game.
I think the main problem here is: how would the stores being popular translate in more money for the landlord?Jasoco wrote:I don't know exactly how being a landlord for a mall would work money-wise. Perhaps having successful stores in the mall would make more exclusive stores that are able and willing to pay more for the rent attracted to rent a store building?

Perhaps "Landlord" was the wrong word. Someone owns a mall. Someone gets paid for that building with money that comes from the franchises that rent space. You would be the guy in charge so to speak. The better designed your mall is, the more people patronize it and the more likely you are to get higher profile stores.
The less people want to visit, the less money stores make. When a store doesn't feel it is making what it needs to, it will close and you will end up with empty space. Which means less money in your pocket. You ever seen an abandoned mall? What happened? People stopped going, or a big name store went out of business and no one wanted to move into its place so one by one the stores disappear as people stop coming. Which results in an abandoned mall. Which is what you want to avoid.
I dunno.

I assume a kiosk can be pretty expensive as well, what about one of those food stands, I don't expect those to be cheap (especially when they're the only food store).
