I'd suggest either Linux or OS X, they're pretty good.

Don't try to convert him now, he'll go there by himself.. at least he will think it was a choice.

On both Windows and Linux, I use SciTE. If you have downloaded Lua for Windows (or whatever it was called), SciTE will be included.

If someone were to create Löve based custom syntax highlighting and auto-completion for Geany, he or she would win a thousand internets.
