Willing to code in Lua for free

Post by Germanunkol »

Hi everyone,

I have a bit of free time during the summer and instead of starting another project on my own, I would rather help out with an already existing project. Experience teaches that most indies develop their own amazing ideas but then fail to finish them - I wan't to try the opposite: Instead of coming up with my own awesome unfinishable project, I'd like to help finish someone elses.
In the past, I mostly programmed alone, and I'd like to learn how to program with another programmer.
So I am willing to work for you, for free, subject to some conditions. I have experience in C, C++, Lua and a bit of experience in web programming (php, html, mysql) and java. I'd like to stick mainly to Löve and Lua for this, though.

Games I would help out with:
  • Should have an interesting idea behind it. I don't want to program another Mario clone. Something unique is nice.
  • Should be a realistic goal. No MMO.
  • There must be at least one other, dedicated, programmer involved. I don't want to make your game, I just want to help out. And I want to learn how to programm in a team.
What I would also like:
  • Multiplayer is a plus, but not neccessary. I like multiplayer, and have a lot of experience in it (see below).
  • Open source is also a plus, but not a must. I like this one, too :D
  • Git or something similar for management of the project.
For reference, see some previous works:
  • Combat Simulation System (C) What I did: Network code, player movement, UI code, all the code besides the shaders, basically.
  • Wiki-Based-RPG (Lua, Löve) What I did: Everything. Mainly a proof-of-concept that involved lots of interaction of the game with the internet.
  • trAInsported (Lua, Löve) What I did: Everything. Lots of network code was involved here...
If you have an interesting project and would like me to join you, feel free to write here or send me a pm! If I get a few messages, I'll choose one of them.

P.S. I will only work on Linux. I refuse to switch to other OSes for my hobbies :P

Here you go:

I have unfinished unstarted game where you'd have to connect steam generators with pipes to form a steam plants grid that would outperform enemies' ones.

DO IT.

What could be very useful for the Love community as a whole is if you put together a penlight style library full of game-specific things that would be useful. Just as a for instance, I got side-tracked in writing a small library for doing color conversions between rgb and hsv, hsl, and other color spaces (I may get back to it). Having a whole collection of little libraries added to the wiki would help everyone.

I thought about this, but have a hard time coming up with ideas.

Since I've done a lot of network programming, the best Idea I had so far was a new network library, maybe building up on the already existing LUBE, but adding more high-end functionality, managing player movement interpolation and prediction maybe...
But I don't see a huge market for this. So maybe smaller libs would be better.

I don't like the penlight-style you mention though. I think it should be small modules, not one thing that does it all.

To everyone else, I'll get back to you in a day or two... once I've decided which project to help out with. I got a few nice projects via PMs as well...

Good luck finding a project :) I think it's really cool that you're willing to help people out like this.

Simply out of curiosity (if you and Micha are okay with sharing) do you mind telling us what the game will be about/like? I'm just curious, that's all... :P
